This public landscape design project was developed in collaboration with a local council in Asturias, Arriondas, Spain, with the goal of enhancing a prominent roundabout through thoughtful planting design and sustainable landscaping principles.
Rather than treating the roundabout as a purely functional traffic feature, the project reimagines it as a living landscape that contributes to the visual identity of the area while supporting biodiversity and ecological resilience.
The planting design combines ornamental grasses, flowering perennials, and long-lasting structural plants selected for their adaptability, seasonal interest, and low maintenance requirements. Inspired by naturalistic planting principles, the scheme creates a dynamic composition that changes throughout the year, bringing texture, movement, and colour to the public realm.
Key design objectives included:
• Enhancing biodiversity by creating habitat and food sources for pollinators and beneficial insects
• Reducing long-term maintenance and water requirements through resilient plant selection
• Improving the visual quality of public space with a contemporary, nature-inspired planting design
• Demonstrating how sustainable landscape design can positively contribute to local communities and urban environments
The result is a vibrant and environmentally conscious public landscape that enriches everyday journeys while reconnecting people with nature. This project illustrates how carefully considered planting design can transform even small urban spaces into meaningful green infrastructure that benefits both people and wildlife.
