Naturalistic Planting Design

nature's inspiration as a garden designer

Gardens that move, change and belong to the landscape

We design gardens in many different styles, always responding to the architecture, landscape, climate and people who will live with them.

But Naturalistic Planting is where our heart beats.

We love the movement of ornamental grasses, layers of perennials, seasonal bulbs and the way a garden changes throughout the year. Rather than competing with nature, this approach works with it.

naturalistic planting design in northern spain?

It feels particularly at home in Asturias and Northern Spain, where the surrounding landscape is already so green, powerful and present. But the same philosophy can be adapted beautifully to different climates and landscapes across Spain.

Asturias, Cantabria and Galicia offer an extraordinary setting for Naturalistic Planting Design. Its Atlantic climate, meadows, mountains and lush vegetation allow a designed garden to blend naturally into the wider landscape.

But Naturalistic Planting is not limited to Northern Spain.

In warmer and drier parts of the country, the same principles can be interpreted with drought-tolerant perennials, ornamental grasses and Mediterranean planting.

The plant palette changes. The philosophy doesn't. Work with the place, rather than against it.

What is Naturalistic Planting?

Naturalistic Planting takes inspiration from the way plants grow together in nature and translates it into a carefully designed composition.

Perennials, ornamental grasses, bulbs, shrubs and structural plants are chosen not only for their flowers, but also for their form, texture, movement and seasonal character.

The result feels spontaneous and natural, but every plant has a reason to be there.

Inspired by Piet Oudolf and the Naturalistic Planting Movement

The contemporary Naturalistic Planting movement is closely associated with Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf, whose work changed the way many people experience planting design.

One of its most beautiful principles is simple: a plant does not need to be flowering to be beautiful.

Its structure, seed heads, movement and even the way it fades can all become part of the garden.

This philosophy strongly influences my work, but I don't create copies of a "Piet Oudolf garden". Every planting design is developed specifically for its location, climate, architecture and atmosphere.

Why choose Naturalistic Planting?

A successful garden is a balance of structure and softness. Therefore, we design with both spatial clarity and natural flow in mind.

Each project includes:

• Beautiful through every season
• Sustainable and environmentally friendly
• Supports biodiversity, pollinators and wildlife
• Lower maintenance once established
• Reduced irrigation needs with the right plant selection
• Works with the local climate and soil
• Dense planting helps suppress weeds
• Natural connection with the surrounding landscape
• Ever-changing colour, texture and structure

A Garden Doesn't Have to Be Green All Year

This is perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of Naturalistic Planting in Spain.

We are used to seeing brown plants as something that should be removed. When flowering finishes and grasses turn beige or gold, we may think the garden is no longer looking its best.

But in a naturalistic garden, this transformation is part of the design.

Discovering the Beauty of the Quiet Season

Autumn and winter reveal another garden.

Grasses become straw, copper and gold. Dried perennial flower heads create almost black silhouettes between them. Seed heads catch the low sunlight, rain, mist or frost.

The planting becomes quieter, but also more sculptural.

Against the deep greens, stone, mountains and winter landscape of Asturias and Northern Spain, these colours can be exceptionally beautiful.

The garden isn't failing.

It is simply changing season.

Beautiful for People. Valuable for Nature.

Naturalistic planting is not only about appearance.

Diverse, carefully selected planting can provide food and habitat for pollinators, insects, birds and other wildlife. Leaving selected stems and seed heads through the colder months extends the ecological value of the garden beyond summer.

Dense planting can protect the soil and reduce opportunities for weeds, while plants chosen for the local conditions can create more resilient gardens.

It is an approach where garden design, biodiversity and sustainability can work together.

Naturalistic Doesn't Mean Neglected

A naturalistic garden may look effortless. Designing one is not.

Plant combinations, density, flowering periods, mature sizes, soil, moisture, light and seasonal structure all need to work together.

The aim is not to control nature completely, nor simply to let everything grow wild.

The art is finding the balance between the two.

Naturalistic Planting Design by Garden Design Atelier

Naturalistic Planting is one of my specialities, but never something I impose on a project. The client, architecture and landscape always come first.

I create planting designs and complete garden designs for private gardens, rural properties, hotels, restaurants, retreats, businesses and public landscapes.

Based in Asturias, Northern Spain, Garden Design Atelier works throughout Spain, the Netherlands and internationally.
